Lymphedema, a condition where lymph fluid causes swelling, affects many individuals, leading to discomfort and various complications.
Early intervention is vital to prevent severe complications associated with lymphedema.
At Mosaic Outpatient Therapy – Maryville, three certified lymphedema therapists treat a wide range of patients.
“Managing lymphedema effectively requires a comprehensive approach called Complete Decongestive Therapy,” say Liz Elston, physical therapist at Mosaic Outpatient Therapy – Maryville. “Therapy at Mosaic includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, providing patient education and demonstrating self-management techniques patients can use at home.”
Lymphedema is grouped into two types – primary and secondary lymphedema.
“Primary lymphedema arises from deformities in the lymphatic system present at birth,” says Megan Lindner, physical therapy assistant at Mosaic Outpatient Therapy – Maryville. “Secondary lymphedema occurs due to damage or injury to the lymphatic system from surgeries, blunt force trauma or treatments for cancer such as radiation and chemotherapy.”
Certain risk factors increase the risk of developing lymphedema including a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, venous insufficiency and cancer treatments involving lymph node removal, radiation and chemotherapy.
“Some signs and symptoms include swelling, skin changes, heaviness and discomfort in affected limbs,” says Jacqueline Schulte, physical therapist at Mosaic Outpatient Therapy – Maryville. “The more time fluid is able to accumulate, the greater the chance of leading to skin texture changes, infections and increased discomfort.”
Lymphedema, though challenging, can be effectively managed through a combination of therapies, patient education and early intervention. To learn more about lymphedema treatment at Mosaic Outpatient Therapy – Maryville, please call (660) 562-7908.
