About Pediatrics

Mosaic Life Care Pediatrics in St. Joseph, MO, provides a wide range of services for children ages 0 to 18.  Whether you visit one of our pediatric, family or internal medicine clinics, our pediatric doctors and nurses are dedicated to helping children live their fullest and healthiest lives.

Why a Pediatrician?

Like other medical specialties, pediatricians go through specific training in order to treat children of all ages from birth to adulthood, unlike family physicians — who take care of patients of all ages. Both have the same years of training, but pediatricians have in-depth knowledge of what children need to stay healthy, behavioral issues and how to care for a child’s growing body. When it comes to giving your child the care they need, trust Mosaic’s pediatricians to be there for them.

Choosing a Pediatrician

Parents should start looking for a pediatrician about three months before their child is born. Once a pediatrician has been selected, ask questions to make sure they’re a good fit.

What to ask:

  • What are the office hours?
  • Do they work alone or in a group? If they work alone, how will our child get care if their pediatrician is unavailable?
  • Are they affiliated with a pediatric hospital in your area?
  • Do they return phone calls only during office hours, or after hours, too?
  • Can your child’s medical records be accessed online?
  • Can the pediatrician handle emergencies?
  • How much is covered by insurance?
  • Do they refer to specialists if your child needs one?
  • What is the office’s vaccination policy?
  • Will the pediatrician come to the hospital to examine your newborn?

Preparing Your Child for a Visit

Visits to the doctor can be scary for children for numerous reasons. They may feel fear about separation from parents, pain or the unknown. Some children may even feel guilty about their condition, injury or illness. When it’s time to bring your child to the pediatrician, it’s important to communicate with them about what to expect.

You can do this by:

  • Talking about why they’re going
  • Talking about any negative feelings
  • Tell them what happens in routine checkups
  • Tell them about what happens during the exam they’re at the pediatrician for
  • Include them when gathering information before and during appointments
