Chilblains

Overview

Chilblains may be an abnormal blood vessel response. Women, underweight people, and those with Raynaud's phenomenon are at increased risk.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include itching, bumps, and red- to violet-colored patches on the hands or feet.

Treatments

The skin usually clears up on its own within one to three weeks, though it may recur for years. Medications can help, but weather-appropriate clothing is the best bet.
