Degenerative changes in the spine: Is this arthritis?

Overview

Degenerative disc disease (osteoarthritis of the spine) often occurs in the neck or lower back. With age, the soft discs cushioning the spine dry out and shrink.

Symptoms

The spine loses flexibility. Bone spurs may pinch a nerve root, causing pain or weakness.

Treatments

Treatment can include exercise, medication, and physical therapy.
