Disseminated intravascular coagulation

Overview

In disseminated intravascular coagulation, abnormal clumps of thickened blood (clots) form inside blood vessels. Using up the clotting factors can lead to massive bleeding. Causes include inflammation, infection, and cancer.

Symptoms

Symptoms include blood clots, and bleeding, possibly from many sites in the body.

Treatments

Treatment may include plasma transfusions and blood thinners. The condition may be fatal.
