Epiglottitis


Overview

Epiglottitis occurs when the epiglottis swells, blocking air to the lungs. The epiglottis serves as a lid over the windpipe. The condition can be caused by burns, injury, or infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a severe sore throat and a high-pitched breathing sound.

Treatments

Emergency treatment is needed. A breathing tube may be placed in the windpipe.
