Hashimoto's thyroiditis

Overview

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a condition in which the immune system attacks the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck (thyroid). Inflammation prevents the thyroid from producing hormones normally.

Symptoms

Symptoms include fatigue and unexplained weight gain.

Treatments

Treatment with synthetic hormone medications is usually effective.
