Heel pain
When to make a doctor’s appointment
Make an appointment to see a doctor if:
- Painful at rest
- Persists or worsens over a few weeks or more despite home care
- Limits ability to work or do daily tasks
Self-care
Rest, and avoid running, standing for a long time, or walking on hard surfaces. Apply ice for up to 20 minutes, three times a day. Try over-the-counter heel cups or wedges in shoes.
When to seek immediate medical care
See a doctor immediately if:
- Severe pain and swelling
- Caused by injury
- Unable to flex or bend foot downward
- Unable to walk comfortably
- Fever associated with numbness or tingling in heel
