Hemolytic disease of the newborn

Overview

In hemolytic disease of the newborn, a newborn's red blood cells are attacked by immune system proteins (antibodies) from the mother. The attack begins before the baby is born.

The condition occurs when the baby's blood type is different from the mother's and can be detected during pregnancy.

Treatments

Blood transfusions may be needed.
