Iodine deficiency


Overview

Iodine deficiency is a lack of iodine in the diet.

Iodine deficiency can cause enlargement of the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck (thyroid) or an underactive thyroid. During pregnancy, the condition can be harmful to a growing baby's mental development.

Treatments

Treatment includes iodine supplements. Complications require additional treatment.
