Iron deficiency anemia


Overview

Iron deficiency anemia is too few healthy red blood cells due to too little iron in the body. Without enough iron, red blood cells can't carry enough oxygen to body tissues. Iron deficiency can lead to heart conditions in anyone and delay development of unborn babies.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include extreme fatigue, weakness, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, brittle nails and poor appetite.

Treatments

Treatment includes iron supplements and a focus on any underlying causes.
