Joint pain


When to make a doctor’s appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Accompanied by redness or swelling
  • There's warmth around the joint
  • Interferes with ability to complete daily tasks

Self-care

Regular exercise helps mobility and flexibility, decreases pain, and doesn't cause damage. Low-impact activities, ice packs, and over-the-counter pain relievers also help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Intense pain or joint deformity
  • Sudden swelling
  • The joint no longer moves
