Overview

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks body tissues and organs.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the areas affected. The most distinctive sign is a rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across the nose and cheeks. But it doesn't always occur.

Medications may reduce symptoms.
