When to make a doctor’s appointment
Make an appointment to see a doctor if:
- Bleeding longer than a week or in between periods
 - Menstrual flow heavier than usual
 - Passing blood clots on more than one day of period
 - Having to double-up on pads to prevent soaking through
 - Affecting daily activities
 - Any bleeding after menopause
 
Self-care
Self-care may include taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others).
When to seek immediate medical care
See a doctor immediately if:
- Soaking through more than one pad or tampon an hour over several hours
 - Accompanied by fatigue, shortness of breath
