Pectus carinatum

Overview

With pectus carinatum, the breastbone protrudes outward abnormally. It may not be noticeable until after the adolescent growth spurt.

Symptoms

The main concern is usually appearance, but shortness of breath can occur.

Treatments

Use of a brace to help flatten the chest is the preferred treatment if bones are still growing. Surgery is an option in severe cases.
