Polycythemia


Overview

The type of polycythemia depends on the cause. It can be caused by a genetic mutation or be a response to a condition, such as smoking or lung or heart disease.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary but may include chest and abdominal pain, weakness, achiness, and fatigue.

Treatments

Depending on the type, treatment may include quitting smoking, taking medication, or removing blood from the body (phlebotomy).
