Precocious puberty

Overview

Precocious puberty usually occurs before age eight in girls and before age nine in boys. The cause is often unknown.

Symptoms

Symptoms in girls include breast development and a first period. Symptoms in boys include enlarged testicles and penis, a deepening voice, and facial hair, often on the upper lip.

Treatments

Treatment is typically a medication to delay further development.
