Scurvy

Overview

Scurvy is rare in the United States. Those who lack fruits and vegetables in their diets are at risk.

Symptoms

Symptoms may not occur for a few months after a person's dietary intake of vitamin C drops too low. Bruising, bleeding gums, weakness, fatigue, and joint pain are among scurvy symptoms.

Treatments

Treatment involves taking vitamin C supplements and eating citrus fruits, potatoes, broccoli, and strawberries.
