Thyroid disease

Overview

Thyroid disease involves any dysfunction of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. This gland makes hormones that regulate the body's metabolism.

Many thyroid diseases occur when this gland releases too many or too few hormones. Other thyroid disorders include nodules, cancer, and enlarged thyroid (goiter).
