Tinnitus
When to make a doctor’s appointment
Make an appointment to see a doctor if:
- Develops after a cold or other upper respiratory infection and persists longer than a week
- Symptoms are bothersome
- Possibly developing hearing loss
Self-care
Distracting sounds such as a fan, low-volume radio static, or soft music may make tinnitus more tolerable. Relaxation, biofeedback, and exercise may also help.
When to seek immediate medical care
See a doctor immediately if:
- Onset is sudden, especially if only in one ear
- Occurs with sudden dizziness or hearing loss
